Mixtapes for Hookers

One last thing before I go…

The video for Disturbia’s finally been released!  I won’t post it here because I’m sure it’ll be taken down in five minutes (this may work, maybe), but hoo boy is it a good one.  It’s all spooky and creepy in a really flashy way with a headdress and spiders, and it doesn’t involve lots of product placement or the transformation of the set into a club scene halfway through.  Woooo!

I think I was a little bit negative when I only called this my #18 song of the year so far…  Especially since it’s seriously the only song I’ve heard coming out of anybody’s car in the last couple of weeks and I’ve been playing it myself ten times a day and I’m not sick of it yet.

Estelle Getty Died

Somebody just walked by my desk and told me that Estelle Getty died.  Hmmm…  Apparently she’d been sick for years, which I didn’t know.  And apparently it only happened a few hours ago.  Oh well.

As much as I used to like hanging out with my grandparents for the 227/Amen/Golden Girls/Empty Nest Saturday nights, something about watching her on The Golden Girls creeps me out today.  Mostly the relationship between Sophia, her character, and her daughter Dorothy.  Dorothy’s always threatening to send her mother into a home, and Sophia’s always judging her daughter for having a lame sex life.  Ha! Ha! Umm…  I mean, it’s something that bugs me about a lot of sitcoms, especially the ones about families, where too many of the jokes come from people being mean to one another.  (Which is why I think Family Guy and Everybody Loves Raymond are two of the most disturbingly creepy things ever produced, although I’ve actually been wondering lately whether it has anything to do with my own upbringing as an Italian-American in Rhode Island.  Not really.  Well, kinda really.)

That said, I still really like The Golden Girls when I’m in the mood, particularly the completely ridiculous episodes like the one where they get trapped in a boat that’s about five feet away from the Caribbean resort they’re staying at, or the one where Blanche’s lesbian friend gets a thing for Rose.  I like it when Sophia and Dorothy dress up as Sonny and Cher and I like it when they all go on a game show.

Anyway, I guess that’s all I have to say about Estelle Getty right now.  I’m heading out in a few minutes to see Wayne Koestenbaum, who might be even gayer than blog posts about The Golden Girls.

This Fall Is Going To Be Awesome

I’m not quite sure why this would be coming out on the second day of fall, but I’m pretty excited that there’s finally going to be a third album by the ever-delightful All Girl Summer Fun Band.  The record, entitled Looking Into It, will be out September 23rd on the band’s own label, which is something that apparently exists.

I’m not a big fan of the the Thermals, the main project of drummer Kathy Foster, or the Softies, guitarist Jen Sbragia’s full-time band*, or that kind of cutesy longing Pacific Northwest indie in general, really.  But AGSFB’s first two albums (especially the second one) have provided me with endless enjoyment over the past bunch of years and I’m really excited another one’s coming.

(*Actually I don’t dislike the music of the Softies; I just oppose them on principle, because they wrote a song about how boring Rhode Island was and then named a whole album after that song.  To which I say, stay on the west coast, hippies!)
