This Week Sucks

So, to keep things short:  This week I’m going through job search shit, sick grandparent shit, money shit, credit card shit, student loan shit, people being idiots shit, looking like a jackass in front of a whole city shit, and like nine other kinds of shit on top of that this week.

Also, I only just now figured out what I want to be for Halloween.  Sadly, I have somewhere to be in an hour, though, and don’t think I have time to pull together a Lady From Sunscreem costume:

On the bright side, Days Of Our Lives was pretty good today and Bruce LaBruce accepted my Facebook friend request.  I’m up to 249!  If you want to be the magic quarter-of-a-thousand on my friends list, cliquez-ici.  (But only if you’re nice and like the blog, and not if you’re stalking me and want access to all of my friends and half of my cousins.)

Dear Craigslist: Fuck You.

I’m so fucking annoyed right now.

I have two separate Gmail accounts.  Actually, three, but one of them’s related to a non-profit thing I do so I don’t really count it. But two personal accounts.  One, which has my name attached to it, is for everyday e-mails I send to people I actually know.  The other one is the dirty one, which I use for porn mailing lists and escort ads and any other situation where I don’t want people to know my first and last name, when I answer ads about jobs or comment on other people’s blogs, for instance.

But now, in order to post ads in the dirty sections of Providence Craigslist, you need an account. I do some nudey photo stuff occasionally, and generally find that posting in the m4m sections gets more interesting results than in ‘adult gigs;’ because ‘adult gigs’ elicit responses from guys that want you to set up porn shoots for them because they can’t get laid on their own.) Now that I’m unemployed, I figured I might as well do some photo stuff, especially if I’m going to buld the website I’ve been meaning to build myself since like 2004.

So I went to login to my Craigslist account, which I vaguely remembered creating at one point. I put in my e-mail address and the password I usually use, and they didn’t work. None of my passwords worked.

Okay. So I clicked on the ‘forgot password’ link. Then I got an e-mail telling me I didn’t have an account. Okay, maybe I was wrong about already having an account. I went to sign up for one, and was informed that there was already an account with my e-mail address.

So I was all like what the fuck, you know. I tried using my other e-mail address, and the same thing happened. Couldn’t retrieve the password because I didn’t have an account; couldn’t sign up for a new account because I already had one.

I tried again a little while later, thinking it might have just been a temporary glitch. Nope.

So, out of frustration, I created another gmail account, just to see what would happen. I created a Craigslist account with the new e-mail, and everything seemed fine. But then when I tried to post an ad, I got a message telling me that my account needed to be verified by phone. As if Craigslist having my phone number would somehow prevent people from posting illegal ads. Even though I was reluctant to give them my phone number, I did anyway…

Whereupon I got a message telling me that my phone number was already associated with a different account. (Probably, I’m guessing, my dirty one.) So then I typed in my house number and got the exact same message.

Now, even if it made sense for Craigslist to need my phone number in order to post an ad on their personals site, there is no fucking excuse why one account having a phone number should prevent someone else with the same number from having an account. What if I didn’t have my own cell phone? What if I shared my phone with my spouse, or kids, or parents? Or what if I didn’t have a phone at all? It’s possible, but it’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to put a fucking ad on Craigslist. Jesus.

Anyway, that’s what took up a really stupid part of my morning. Added to the annoying after-effects of a wine dinner last night that was heavy on the wine and very light on the dinner, I’d have to say that today’s kinda sucking.

Alicia Keys And Her Earrings Have Nothing On Duffy

So, I know you’re distraught about that new Jack White/Alicia Keys monstrosity of awfulness disguised as a James Bond theme, and who can blame you?

Luckily, Duffy’s stepped in and, just in time for the release of the awkwardly-titled Quantum of Solace, put out a vaguely menacing, string-filled number that just sort of screams “Do me now, Daniel Craig, or the world gets it!”

I know a lot of people really can’t stand Duffy, and I admit that positioning oneself as the wholesome Amy Winehouse probably isn’t a very good way to avoid scorn.  But I liked Mercy (though mainly for the rappy bit in the middle), and I like Rain On Your Parade even more.  (I wasn’t so into the in-between singles, but hey, whatever.)

Anyway, the video’s here, in all its unembeddable glory.

Reasons Why I Hate Being Broke

I think I’ve spoken before about how enraptured I am with the photos released weekly through Jen Bekman’s 20X200 website.  Every Wednesday they release a limited edition print in three different sizes: 200 little ones, 20 medium-sized ones, and 2 big ones.

Best of all, the prints are all really freaking awesome.

When Bekman announced in one of her twice-weekly e-mails (they also release non-photo prints on Tuesday, but I never like those as much) that she’d be doing a Nina Berman bonus print at the end of this week, I said to myself “Oh God, I hope it’s the one with the camera and the flag because that’s like my favorite photo ever.”  And then I said “Oh God, I hope it’s not the one with the camera and the flag because I have no money at all right now and I’d be wicked pissed if I couldn’t make it mine.  Kind of like how I was totally irked two weeks ago when they released that wonderful Mickey Smith print.”

And, as luck would have it, the bonus edition was released an hour ago, and it’s totally the one with the camera and the flag.

So, uh.  Anybody wanna buy me some art?  There’s only 23 of the little ones left.

I’m Soon To Be Appearing In An Award-Winning Movie, Maybe

Somehow I missed this:  Todd Verow’s Between Something And Nothing won the Jury Award for Best Feature at the Fire Island Film & Video Festival last month.

I worked on the movie after Verow posted an ad on Craigslist sfor an assistant on movie about hustlers in Providence.  I wrote back and said that, as a hustler film enthusiast in Providence, I’d probably be pretty good.  We met, got along fairly well, and then I helped out during production.  We hung out in the attics of the local gay bars, and I held the boom a couple of times and found him an apartment.  I had a cameo as “John #3″ as well, although I’m not sure if that made the final cut.  (I have no idea why it would have.)

The DVD cover shows one of my favorite spaces in Providence (which I used shortly after that for a fashion spread in a local magazine.)  Somehow I don’t remember ever seeing Mr Cute Red Pants with his shirt off, though I’m fairly certain I was standing right there when this was shot.  God, gay movie covers with your incessant shirtlessness!

Anyway, the DVD will be out in early November.  I’ll let you know more when I see it.  Just to warn you, though, this movie isn’t full of Verow blowing guys in park men’s rooms, though I recommend his earlier film Anonymous if you’re into that sort of thing.

Rhode Island, with an 8.8% unemployment rate, is now the most unemployed state in the country, passing Michigan, which I think had the honor for pretty much the last twenty years.

I find out Friday whether I’ll be getting unemployment or not.  Or, at least I talk to them on Friday…  Who knows when I’ll actually find out, although hopefully it’ll be soon since the end of the month is coming up and I have no rent money.

Lady GaGa Is Lovin’ With Her Muffin

The video for Lady GaGa’s Poker Face is out.  I’m sort of unimpressed with it, and not just because the song’s one of the less interesting ones on the album.  (Boys Boys Boys would have been a much better single choice, if you ask me.  Or Love Game.)

While I like the dog and don’t mind the ridiculous blue outfit, something about the undie-clad himbos and giant whitish bangs is trying a little too hard to go for the latter-day Cher crowd, the kind that discovers new music by watching those dreadful continuously-mixed video montages at certain kinds of gay bars.

That said, GaGa’s album is out next Tuesday.  Not that any of you care, I’m sure.

RIP Dee Dee Warwick

Were it not for my roommate, I probably would have never come across Dee Dee Warwick, the less-famous sister of Dionne who died the other day at age 63.  Her voice was a lot more powerful than Dionne’s, and she used it to great effect on the original version of I’m Gonna Make You Love Me (later made famous by the Supremes) as well as on covers like Suspicious Minds and Monday Monday, turning one of the Mamas and the Papas’ drearier efforts into a lively stomper:

Dee Dee Warwick, Suspicious Minds

Dee Dee Warwick, I’m Gonna Make You Love Me

Dee Dee Warwick, Foolish Fool
