In an attempt to make my work day less dull, I put on the station of music that last.fm thinks I’d like. (I’ve been thinking a lot about music recommendations, and how everybody’s always working under the constant assumption that you always need to be discovering new music. If I have more time some time I’ll maybe write an essay about that or something.) Anyway, here’s my feelings about the first twenty songs they played me.
Saturday Looks Good To Me – The Girl’s Distracted
This song is terrible. I can’t believe I liked them so much a couple of years ago.
Jordan Knight – Give It To You
Sometimes he’s goody goody. Right now he’s notty notty. Chorus is a little Ghost Town DJs-ish, though.
Jarvis – Don’t Let Him Waste Your Time
I got this album at the same time as all the Pulp reissues and the Peel sessions so I probably didn’t give it enough of a chance because I was too busy listening to Turkey Mambo Momma and Mile End and whatnot. Probably just because I knew it first, I still prefer the Nancy SInatra version of this song.
Visage – Tar
I think I only know Fade To Grey, but this song’s pretty nice in a rawer Human League sort of way.
Looper – Mondo ’77
I forgot about this song! I mostly knew Uncle Ray, and the songs on the Up A Tree album, and that one Hurray For Y2K song that I can’t find anywhere on the internet. But this one’s pretty good, too. And who knew it was on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack? It’s long, though.
A Flock Of Seagulls – I Ran
This song’s pretty okay. I don’t think I’d ever choose to put it on, or anything, but I don’t mind hearing it once in a while.
Tap Tap – On My Way
This is the first artist they’ve played that I’d never heard of before. They’re okay, in a fairly unremarkable indie-pop way, though they’re far less impressive than Shanice’s I Love Your Smile, which one of my co-workers is playing right now.
Essential Logic – The Order Form
I love Essential Logic! This isn’t one of their catchier songs, though, is it?
Slumber Party – Bag of Spiders
Oooh, Slumber Party! I’d forgotten about them, although I’m pretty sure I only knew of them from one mixtape I got back when people state mixtapes on actual tapes. Or my friends and people I met on the internet still did, anyway. I really like this song, I’ll have to remember it. And them. Thanks, last.fm!
The Flaming Lips – A Spoonful Weighs A Ton
Dude, stop whining. (Ha!) I never got the big woo about the Flaming Lips, and Wayne Coyne’s voice always sorta drove me away (see also: Built To Spill.) But I don’t really dislike them. According to last.fm, they’ll soon be playing at something called Birthfest in Grenada.
A Song I Missed
Sorry, I got excited/distracted because Facebook thought I might know LD Beghtol, I think because bearded New Yorkers frequently friend-request me and who am I to say no? But it was six minutes long and by My Latest Novel. I missed the title. It was okay.
Teenage Fanclub – December
This is really nice! I never think I like Teenage Fanclub, but this song’s pretty awesome, judging from half of one listen. Should I maybe buy Bandwagonesque one of these days? And ooh, now there’s strings! What a lovely song.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Shuffle Your Feet
I like BRMC. I have one of their albums and everything. I just never listen to them. This song’s okay enough, though the vocals seem a little bit forced. I wouldn’t kick it out of bed, as they say, but I wouldn’t necessarily hit on it, either.
Beat Happening – In Between
Beat Happening are a group I know almost nothing about. I should fix that. This song’s nifty.
Lo-Fi-Fnk – Boylife
This is good! Dancy music made by people that probably don’t do much dancing themselves. I’ve seen their name around but don’t think I actually heard anything until now.
We Are Scientists – Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt
I had this album (With Love And Squalor) briefly, but got rid of it because I thought it was totally dullsville. Maybe I should try again, since this is nice and I liked their song on the Nick and Norah’s soundtrack so much.
!!! – Myth Takes
I forgot about !!!, whose name I always thought should be pronounced ‘wokka wokka wokka,’ a la Fozzie Bear. I like this.
CeCe Peniston – Keep On Walkin’
Ooh, forgotten songs off the Finally album! This is nice, in a Brand New Heavies/M People sort of way. I also feel like I vaguely remember it being a follow-up single. Nothing I’d put on myself, but it’s pleasant enough in an internet radio sort of way. If I were going out for soup and salad I’d expect this to be on in the restaurant, if it was a restaurant that was trying to be hip and eclectic.
Dead Disco – The Treatment (Metronomy Mix)
I don’t think I’m in the mood for this right now. Not to say that I hate it, but it’s not really doing anything for me right now… Dead Disco passed me by when they were big (what, two years ago?) and it might be for the best that way.
Olivia Tremor Control – Holiday Surprise 1, 2, 3 (Live)
Whatever happened to Olivia Tremor Control? I thought they were pretty good back around my freshman year of college, though for the life of me I can’t remember what their big hit was called or how it went. They were also frequently on mixtapes I got, back when I got mixtapes. Ahh, the past… Don’t think I know this song, though.
