So, it’s time to introduce a new feature here on Mixtapes For Hookers. It’ll be running for all of 2009, assuming the world and/or my life doesn’t abruptly end before the year does. It’s going to be a look back at the not-quite-over-yet-and-still-untitled decade, using my handy-dandy Song of the Year lists.
Here’s how it works: Every December I spend a really inordinate amount of time making and remaking my lists of my favorite songs of the year. It’s something I’ve been doing since I was a child and I doubt I’ll be stopping anytime soon. Sometimes my favorite songs of the year are still my favorites many years later (ie. White Town’s Your Woman, my #1 song of 1997) and sometimes they’re not (ie. The Rockafella Skank, 1998.) But I thought it’d be interesting to go through the lists for each year, re-evaluate each song, and then at the end of the year see how I think the songs all stack up against each other. I’m going to run through the top 10 for each year, one song at a time, every few days between now and November.
So, 2000:

Tiffany, Could’ve Been
Oh, Christ. I banned this.
The Lucksmiths, ?
I’ve loved the Lucksmiths since the tape-trading days of my millennial teenage years. Don’t actually have any of their albums, though, for some reason, though their Staring At The Sea 10″ is one of my most cherished records (and one of maybe 4 10″s that I actually own.)
The Softies, Something From Holidays In Rhode Island
I’ve always been opposed to the Softies for suggesting that Rhode Island is a boring and dreary place. However, it’s very boring and dreary in Rhode Island today, so I’m not minding this, even though it is kinda wimpy.
Paul Young, Everytime You Go Away
Really, last.fm? Although I think it’s funny that now I’m the person in the office that’s listening to jarringly dull adult contemporary standards, rather than the one that just complains about them. (Also, he’s touring Israel soon. Good luck with that, Paul Young!)
Edwyn Collins, One Is A Lonely Number
Ooh, good one! I don’t know this song. It’s on Home Again, which I really ought to get one of these days. Although I’m not sure how I feel about the music; it doesn’t seem totally relevent to the songs, from the couple of tracks I’ve heard… Sort of samey, like it’s not doing enough to support the lyrics. Nice, though.
I can’t decide how I feel about the matter, being totally unfamiliar with Chromeo myself. I don’t think I’d kick the man out of bed, to use an unfortunate expression twice in as many days, but I also wouldn’t admit thinking he was hot until I a) gave him a makeover, b) made his facial hair less unsightly, and c) fed him some cheeseburgers to get some meat on them bones.
[via Twitter, which I joined for no reason the other day.]

I decided that one way to force myself to do more photography would be to make myself a website. Not a Flickr page or anything, but a real website.
But that was months ago, and I still haven’t done it. If you’re interested to see what (little) I’m starting with, though, check out my photo page here. It’s not very exciting, but I’d be interested to get some feedback, either in the comments or in an e-mail.
