As someone who (normally) hosts a top 40 program, I thought I’d take this week’s Spring Break pause to check out the competition, and OH MY GOD IT IS SO TERRIBLE. Jason Mraz and Jesse McCartney and this God-awful Katy Perry ballad, all in the first twenty minutes?!?! With the only break being TI and Rihanna’s Live Your Life which is like eleven years old at this point? Also Ryan Seacrest just said he wanted to father Katy Perry’s baby. And now he’s talking about The Rock. And doing a Mentos commercial. God.
Things I never thought I’d see but did see today:
1. A Magnetic Fields song in a Puma ad.
I’m not sure how I feel about the female vocalist singing the line about the pretty boy in his underwear, but really, this ad is pretty cool, even if I can’t really wrap my head around the concept of light-injected footwear.

I don’t know if any of you gentle readers are in Chicago, but I’m going to be in town for the opening of this show next Friday. I’m heading out Wednesday afternoon and between now and then I doubt I’ll be posting much, because there’s hours and hours of editing left to the video the BF and I are showing.
Actress Natasha Richardson died suddenly today after a tragic ski accident. While I’m not overly familiar with the actress, and haven’t seen either The Handmaid’s Tale or Patty Hearst for some reason, she did star in one of my favorite bad movies, The Favor The Watch and the Very Big Fish. In it, she plays Sybil, a woman wanted by both Bob Hoskins (whom she meets when they’re both dubbing foreign porn) and her ex Jeff Goldblum, a mopey pianist who starts to think he’s Jesus.
It’s all very silly, in that British sort of way where very silly things somehow seem very arty, but it’s a lot of fun and the performances all very good. (French actors Jean-Pierre Cassel and Michel Blanc both have parts, too.)
Aside from this film, which you should track down if you can, I’ve only seen Richardson in Widows’ Peak (which is one of those old-lady movies I used to like as a teenager, like The Enchanted April) and Nell, the Jodie Foster goop-a-thon that I liked when I was fifteen but which seems really dreadful in retrospect. Oh, and I almost forgot that she was the mean rich lady whose identity Jennifer Lopez stole in Wayne Wang’s masterpiece Maid In Manhattan.

I just bought myself a computer! It’s the first time I’ve had a new computing device in 1999. I am SO VERY HAPPY.
Also, I’ll have internet in my house after Thursday. I am SO VERY HAPPY about that, too. And that means I’ll also be able to listen to the thousands and thousands of songs that are stored on my near-useless old hard drive.
Yay!

After one listen, I really like this song, which comes from Golden Filter. But I won’t say any more than that because I’m heading out for the afternoon. Expect a few days of quietness here, as I’ll be editing video all day tomorrow and then there’s The Pop Chart on Sunday. And Monday’s my James Joyce St. Patrick’s Eve event. And the rest of the week I’ll be gorging myself on zeppoli and spying out the window at my hot, hot, hot new mailman, because as of Monday I’m working from home. (Sort of. As usual my home situation is complicated and silly.)
Hopefully one day soon I’ll get to finish the draft about the Made In Mexico/Cowgirl show I saw last Sunday, as well as tell you how awesome the Masshysteri* show was on Wednesday (hint: it was pretty awesome.)

I always talk about starting a workout program that’s entirely based around following various celebrity fitness tapes from the eighties and early nineties. You know, the Eric Nies Grind workout one week, Dixie Carter’s fitness yoga the next. Then Jody Watley, Paula Abdul, and so on. Forever, because that’s how many celebrity workout tapes there are.
