2002. It’s About Time For Songs #3′s Arrival

[My recap of my favorite singles of 2002 continues with a look at the year's two best spelling mistakes.]

#3.  Christina Aguilera, Dirrty, and Nelly, Hot In Herre

Christina Aguilera never came across as a particularly innocent girl, but the world wasn’t especially prepared for something as in-your-face crazy as Dirrty when the singer returned in late 2002 after a two-year solo absence from the charts.* Bearing almost no resemblance to any of her earlier singles, Dirrty was a completely batshit mixture of hip-hop sounds with divalike wailing and messy pop production.

Aguilera had little interest in placing herself as Britney Spears’ rival, which is probably why she waited three years to follow-up on her debut.  Spears had already released five singles off her third album before Aguilera dropped Dirrty, the lead single from her second. Based on Redman’s Let’s Get Dirty (I Can’t Get In Da Club), Aguilera’s anthem is all about plopping layers of vocals atop one another, seemingly with little regard for the music.  (more…)

Over at ESCtoday they’ve been running polls to figure out what the best Eurovision song of the decade is.  They’ve narrowed it down to 24 finalists.  After watching every performance yet again on Youtube, here’s how I’ve decided to cast my ballot (as soon as the polls open up):

12 points: Turkey (Sertab Erener, Every Way That I Can, 2003)
10 points: Estonia (Urban Symphony, Rändajad, 2009)
8 points: Belgium (Kate Ryan, Je t’adore, 2006)
7 points: Portugal (Vânia Fernandes, Senhora do mar, 2008)
6 points: Germany (Texas Lightning, No No Never, 2006)
5 points: Greece (Helena Paparizou, My Number One, 2005)
4 points: Finland (Lordi, Hard Rock Hallelujah, 2006)
3 points: France (Patricia Kaas, Et s’il fallait le faire, 2009)
2 points: Spain (Beth, Dime, 2003)
1 point: Hungary (NOX, Forogj, világ!, 2005)
honorable mention: Switzerland (Vanilla Ninja, Cool Vibes, 2005)
-6000 points: Iceland (Johanna, Is It You?, 2009)

After the jump, some of my favorite Eurovision songs of the decade:

Sunday News

BFA-Alex-James--Sophie-Ell

National Banned books week just kicked off.

Playboy’s Daily Advisor answers a question from a fool.  Or someone just trying to be funny?

Mpho keeps twittering about how good the new Ou Est Le Swimming Pool is, and I’m inclined to agree, though it’s time for people to move on from that pastel rainbow boxy hipster font.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor gets the Tumblr treatment.  I kind of miss 1998, when she would have gotten an Internet Shrine hosted by Angelfire featuring a brick background and lots of gifs of torches.

What do I have in common with Judy Garland, Charles Atlas, Mike Piazza, Natalie Merchant and Steven Tyler?  This.

A couple of years ago I suddenly became very, very allergic to pine nuts, which made me very, very sad.  This article makes me a little less sad.

The future of museums.

Whoever made this porny GIF is a genius.

I’ve never been to Canada, so I had no idea how awesome their old national parks logo (used until 2004) was.

Newspaper circulation is down, but traffic at the top 50 news websites is up 27%.  I have no idea why this surprises anyone.

The slow decline of the cookbook writer as food anthropologist.

Grand Opening At The Spot Today (heh heh)
September 26, 2009, 8:19 am

Those of you in Rhode Island should head down to Thayer Street in Providence today for the non-Grand Opening of the Center for Sexual pleasure and Health.  While the city of Pawtucket decides whether or not it’s ready to have a non-profit sex resource center, the party that was planned to coincide with the opening will be taking place at The Spot on Thayer. (The Spot, incidentally, is upstairs from my favorite secret lunch place in the whole city.  Their tomato soup is amazing, and they’ve got some of the town’s best french fries.  So I may be sneaking out at some point, is all I’m saying…)

Carol Queen is speaking at 3:30, and afterwards there’s a panel discussion with Vivienne Kramer, Bill Taverner, Rebecca Chalker, Elizabeth Wood, Barbara Carrallas, and Gina Ogden.  At 5 there’s a screening of Happy Endings?, Tara Hurley’s documentary about RI spa workers , and after that lots of sex toys will be given away.  Yay.

I’ll be there all afternoon, too, so say hi if you make it down.

Jeremy Scahill Talks About Blackwater, Makes Me Swoony

scahill

Dreamy Jeremy Scahill made an appearance on Rachel Maddow’s television program this evening to talk about the government’s plan to take money away from ACORN and what the implications of that are, exactly.

For those of you that don’t pay attention to national news, or to those of you in other countries, what it amounts to is this:

Both houses of congress voted to strip money from ACORN after a couple pretending to be a prostitute and a pimp asked members at various local offices to help them start a brothel.  (Hidden cameras were involved, obviously.)  In three instances, ACORN reps fell for the trap, giving the couple advice on what to do, what to say to whom and how to say it.  The videos leaked and the government panicked, stripping the organization of its federal funding.  (In general, ACORN registers people to vote, helps with housing for the poor, and generally behaves like a ramshackle service agency.  My one encounter with the organization’s Providence office was almost accidental, but it appeared to be run by well-meaning though very disorganized hippies; in their defense, though, the ACORN folks were also doing lots of poor people’s income taxes at the time, which would probably turn anyone into a disorganized hippie.)

It’s National Punctuation Day.  Because nothing exists until it has its own day.  To celebrate, here’s a picture of a semi-colon, by far my favorite punctuation mark both visually and functionally.  Surprisingly, only one professor in college ever told me that I overused them; that’s pretty amazing, because I usually have two or three on every page and most people are afraid of them.  Or maybe just intimidated by their beauty.

This totally made my morning.  The song, if you don’t know it, is France Gall‘s 1964 hit Laissez Tomber Les Filles, though thanks to Quentin Tarantino you may be more familiar with April March’s English-language cover.

Those of you that don’t read Super Underwear Perverts for their “Golden Age” posts are missing out.  This file is titled “Bob White,” though I don’t know enough about physique photography to know whether that’s the model or the photographer.  You think I would by now, but no.
