Popjustice just announced the winner of their annual twenty quid music prize, and the good news is that it’s Girls Aloud won for the very good single The Promise. The bad news is that the Pet Shop Boys, La Roux and Little Boots didn’t win, despite the fact that all of their nominated singles were better than the Girls Aloud one.
Of course, I think Girls Aloud deserve the prize, but think it should have been for the much better Untouchable, which, in case you forgot, has a line about beautiful robots dancing alone. (If you’re not a Popjustice follower, you may not be aware that Girls Aloud have now won the prize five times in the seven years since the award’s inception, though they never actually win for the right singles.)
Oh, and in other news the Mercury Prize went to Speech Debelle. I had never heard of her before she was nominated, but I think I kind of really like her.
