Mixtapes for Hookers

Wee Rule.

That is all.  This song just popped onto my iTunes and I thought I’d share, in case you’re unfamiliar with the youthful majesty of the Wee Papa Girl Rappers.

Now I’m off to meet someone I don’t know, to talk about something I don’t know about, at an event that I didn’t know took place at a bar in town that I’ve only ever been to once.  My horoscope tells me that today I should expect “encounters of the intense, possessive type. Jealousy and resentment are in the air, but not because of anything you’ve done, so put aside the urge to blame yourself for whatever happens.”

So that’s exciting, right?

This Week In 1995

While we’re trudging through my early musical listening habits…

From 1993-1997 (and then again in 2000, and then from 2008 on) I’ve kept weekly charts of what my favorite current pop singles are.  Back in the nineties, I kept each year’s countdown in a one-subject notebook, and it’s kind of hilarious how awkward my transition was from country-loving twelve-year old to fan of all things Britpop.

For instance.

This week in 1995, my #1 song was Rain King by the Counting Crows.  Which, while it’s uncool and not great, is actually a pretty catchy and reasonably inoffensive song.  I wouldn’t necessarily turn off the radio if any programmers were uncool enough to ever play it again.  But oy, the rest of the list.

I used to LOVE this song.

The Party were Tiffini, Dee Dee, Albert, Chase, and Damon, five members of the Mickey Mouse Club cast who recorded a couple of albums in the early nineties; in addition to the sugary pop genius above, they also did covers of My Generation, I Know What Boys Like, (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love & Understanding, and the Ronettes’ Walking In The Rain.  Also, I had unnatural feelings about Damon.

In 2007, he and Albert teamed up again to start a hip-hop project called NDecent Proposal; they released a single called To The Bed, which had all the awkward hilarity of fellow Mouseketeer JC Chasez’s All Day Long I Dream About Sex, but none of the charm of that forgotten favorite.

Voila:

If you were born the week this song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, you are now officially old enough to buy cigarettes, vote, and legally look at porn.

Congratulations.

I used to really like this song; I don’t dislike it now, although judging from this performance (the original video’s not on Youtube) is takes about 45 seconds too long to end.

After the jump, the Mickey Mouse Club version of the song, featuring JC Chasez and Matt Morris.

Yeah, So I’m Off The Twitter Grid For A While. And Yet…

Thoughts I would have put on Twitter by this point in the morning if I weren’t on a self-imposed Twiatus:

1. There’s a song on the Ke$ha album called Dancing With Tears In My Eyes.  Lord, please tell me it’s not an Ultravox cover.

2. I subscribe to at least 4 frequently-updated vegan recipe blogs.  And does that make me more into cooking?  No, it just makes me more guilt-riddled.

3. No matter how hard I try to like her songs, Roisin Murphy just kind of gives me a headache. There, I said it.

4. If only Kathy Griffin’s ban from CNN was a sign that CNN might actually be interesting in fucking news instead of fucking people like Kathy Griffin…

5. All aboard for Mu Mu Land!!!  http://bit.ly/6lSI4u

6. I wouldn’t have actually linked to this Liz Phair/Manhunt post, because OMG my mom follows me, but yeah, you should read it.

[NB: Since the news about Pat Bohannon broke, this post's been getting a lot of hits.  But here's a newer one from now (October 2010) with updated info.]

So, yeah.

Everybody and their cousin’s baby’s mother’s favorite sex blogger has already written about this, but those of you who come here for the music or the gay shit might not be aware of the giant brouhaha happening in the sex worker blog world right now.

So.
