That is all.

I’m off to a Marriage Equality meet-and-greet and then I’ll be seeing the Avengers (the wonderful 70′s punk band, not the wonderful television series.)  Posting may be slow/non-existent over the next few days as my boyfriend and I will be beaching it up for the next couple of days with some out of town friends of his.

I moved into my apartment six years ago this Sunday.  On August 1, 2004, I was fresh out of college and fresh out of my parents’ basement.  I only moved about ten minutes away from home (and about five minutes away from school), but I was leaving the suburbs for the city, and in Rhode Island terms ten minutes is a big deal.

Unknowingly, however, I moved to a neighborhood that’s more suburban than the suburbs are.  Unlike all of my friends, who got trendy apartments in the Armory or in Fox Point, I moved to Elmhurst, perhaps the least hip area of the entire city.  It’s mainly inhabited by the elderly and young families and middle-aged gay couples.  There is almost no crime here and the only sounds I hear are the horrid people next door telling their kids not to play too close to the street or, sometimes, terrible folk music or smooth jazz coming from the house across the street.  People here don’t have parties and they don’t like music and if they fight they only do it behind closed doors.

I like it.  There are trees on the street and an Olmsted parkway and a bakery and a pizza place and a library.  There are lots of people walking lots of cute dogs.  Everyone that visits me gets horribly lost the first time they come here, but I also don’t see anyone I know unless I want to.  I don’t really fit in here, demographically; at a city planning meeting I was once pooh-poohed by a woman who scornfully called me a renter, and at the monthly potlucks for the gays of the neighborhood–which, yes, those exist–I’m almost invariably the youngest person by about ten years.
