It is bleak out there today, so this mix is maybe a little bit of a downer. That said, it’s also one of the better compilations I’ve assembled lately, I think. It starts out with Mandy More’s “If Not By Fire,” which recently made rounds on the internet as part of the mixtape Broadcast’s Trish Keenan made shortly before her death. I first heard the song years ago, though, on Saint Etienne’s The Trip mix, which is so so so so wonderful and provided much of the initial inspiration for this blog. And from there we travel through alternate takes of classic Springsteen, Of Montreal covering the only Who song I actually really like, and we finish with a psychedelic kiss off to a gay lover. The whole thing is a little over 59 minutes.

So, for over a year now I’ve been trying to get my behind in gear to do some kind of party for Naked Pictures Of Your Dad… I get a couple dozen hits a day from folks in Providence and a bunch more from nearby Massachusetts, and I like meeting people, and figured why the hell not. I had grand plans at first, for something with a DJ and go-go daddies and a lube sponsorship, say. But that kept not happening, and I’m very often busy planning other events, so I’ve decided to scale back and just invite you guys to hang out over some beers.
So, on Tuesday March 8th (a week from tomorrow) I’m inviting you all down to the Scurvy Dog (1718 Westminster Street), where the music is good and the beer is good and nothing is actually terrible. (I thought about having this at a gay bar, but then couldn’t think of a single one that met any of those three criteria, let alone all of them…)
It’s super informal–I won’t be DJ-ing or anything, and unfortunately there won’t be any middle-aged people dancing on the bar–but I bet it’ll be fun. And my friends are a good-looking people, I think, so there’s that.
I’ll be showing up around 9, I think, for those of you who have to get up in the morning. And probably I’ll be sticking around for the long haul, for those of you that don’t have to get up in the morning.
And, uh. Yeah!
Tomorrow I’ll be heading out to Provincetown for four days of nothing, glorious nothing. I can not even tell you how excited I am to be getting out of here for a little while, and especially that I get to go away for four days and basically spend no money whatsoever.
I’ve been to P-Town in June before, when I was nineteen and had no idea how expensive it would be. I also went in July for Bear Week the past two years, and in October for a wedding. A few years ago the boyfriend and I went for a Thanksgiving getaway, too. But I’ve never been in the middle of winter before.

Any minute now, Naked Pictures Of Your Dad is going to celebrate another milestone: 5,000 posts!
I planned to announce a NPOYD party last week, but my stupid illness/laryngitis–plus planning three other events that will be taking place within a pretty short time-span–have delayed that a little bit… Soon, though, I swear!
So, I’m a little bit grouchy today. Grouchy because it’s a national holiday and I don’t have a day off. Not that everyone has a day off today–even my roommate, a professor at a state-run university–has to work today. But the thing is I don’t have a day on, either.
In fact, I haven’t been working all that much lately, and it’s getting kind of tiresome. If I were independently wealthy, this would be fine: a good time to travel, to work on a novel, or to better myself by taking classes or something. But no. All of those things require money, to some degree, and that is one thing I don’t have at all.

I made it to Park Slope without a hitch, and hung out with my host on her sectional for a little while as my boyfriend, who was getting to Brooklyn at basically the same time I was, tried to find a place to park. My boyfriend has AMAZING luck parking in New York. I remember a few years ago, when I dragged him to see Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, how he complained that the characters in the movie drove everywhere and ALWAYS got parking right in front of where they were going. Well, now he does exactly that. In fact, the last time we were in New York we parked in front of exactly where we were going. In the West Village. TWICE.
I took a shower–our hosts have wonderful water pressure–and then napped for roughly five minutes, just long enough to drool all over myself, before it was time to head to Madame X for the Sex Work Awareness fundraiser. We stopped for a slice along the way–the chopped salad pizza sounded tempting, but there is nothing in the world worse than hot lettuce–and then got on the G train, which was not the F train that we needed. Then we backtracked, switched trains, and made it to Madame X just as Brandon B was finishing his dirty story.
